Heroes of Newerth while still in BETA has left an impression on me. The impression screams “No NOOBS Allowed!” Much like the little tree house with little boys peering through the cracks of the badly put together pieces of wood. Heroes of Newerth is certainly not noob friendly.

There’s no tutorial, no mouse over that specifies what your character is, and no explanation whats so ever about what you are supposed to do in the game much less win the game. So what are you to do? Your friend wants you to join them, but you can’t play with them 24/7. They can’t hand hold you through every bit of gameplay. Or maybe you heard of the game and got lucky enough to grab a free beta key.

There aren’t any guides out there. Trust me I know. I’ve searched. The few guides there are are out of date already. The game is actually in BETA. Every patch will have some change that makes that guide you just found obsolete. Oh, and my favorite part of the guides I’ve found give some item name, tell me to get, but don’t tell me where it is… WHY it’s good for the character… and most importantly WHERE IT IS. Ya I know I already said that, but when you you have 30 seconds to look for an item before your team yells at you for being AFK and not getting into your lane knowing WHERE the item is would be great.

Another thing I find with guides is when they tell you to let your team know you’re a noob from the get go. Because they will help me? Fail. Double, triple omg fail. I’ve done this. Especially after they tell me to pick a specific character that I have yet to play. “God he’s so easy you’ll be fine.” “Ok, what items should I get?” *crickets* “Um, what skills should I level first?” *crickets* Fine.. I’ll get my own items… and not only that I’ll skill up what I want to. I don’t need you guys.. *I die* “OMG Purple’s such a noob!!!” “God Purple you suck!” “Purple wtf” … “Um, I told you I was a noob.” “Purple’s a NOOB!!!” *Vote to kick purple* … FML.

So do you have the drive and willpower to stick it out? Good luck. You’ll need it. What I hope to do with all of this is to create guides truly for noobs. Hopefully for experts too when the time comes.

I will say though that once you get past being a noob you’ll see a better community.

    Author: What items should I get?
    Common_sense: Use the "recommended" tab!
    Author: Oh, but where are these items?!
    Common_sense: Create a private game and look carefully thru all of them.
    Author: What skills should I use?
    Common_sense: Hey, use your brain, dude! Check what they do and figure out on your own what is your hero's role and what skills will you need earlygame.

    And yeah, the community is crap, even if you become a good player... that's why I returned to DotA. There are some very good league-hosting websites, if you do not like leavers and flamers :)
  • Take a look at when this article was written. It was before they even hinted at a tutorial being made. (Thank god they will though)

    Also the dialogue that was given was once you were in a game. When your teammates are yelling at you to pick a hero and then offering absolutely no help even after you tell them you've never played that hero and are a noob. You can't pause the game and go into practice mode. Also at the time I don't think the recommended tab was of any real use. At least not like it is now. Hack and Slash was in pretty much.. every heroes recommended tab. I was Andro going Hack and Slash because it WAS in the recommended tab.

    Lol that's a pretty retarded article ... There's a website that has everything you want to know. Furthermore, this is a BETA version... the final will have single player, bots, tutorial and so on.

    A piece of advice... SUCK IT UP. What the hell are you all whining about? If you dont want to be called a noob MAKE your own UNRANKED game.... and practice all you want.

    If you join a RANKED "noob" only game, you will get screamed at. Get used to it. If you are too much of a sissy to play a challenging game then dont play... In HoN, like Dota... a weak link on the team usually means a loss for that team... So of course no one is going to like you.

    Whoever wrote that guides are obsolete... You are an idiot. Even outdated guides should give you a good idea of how to play the game. A few adjustments in later patches as to price/stats of an item will make little difference.

  • Except you are forgetting heroes and items that completely get reworked in the patch. Boots got a complete makeover a couple of patches ago. Zephyr got a make over last patch as well.

    Amen to this thread. It took me days to look for HoN Beta since I am interested in how it plays. If you don't know anything about DoTA and is a noob at the genre the community sucks big time. this is the most newbie unfriendly multiplayer community I have ever touched and I've tried a fair amount of it.

    I tried to chat and ask how to start, somebody told me to go to control panel and uninstall. OMG! Who the F@ck does he thinks he is, and I'm pretty sure he plays with free beta keys anyway. Such a rude bastard. Anyhow, I tried to create game and practice. No AI play, how do you practice without killing AI heroes, and the interface lets you spend 3000+ gold but in a 5v5 game you start with 500+ gold only? so how do you practice? Farming?

    Then I tried to join noob only games, guess what? I announced I am a noob and 5 servers straight people leave the game. I mean, what is this a fraternity?

    I think the developers better ramp up the game because they are going to die once they ask people to pay unless they curb the attitude of those mother f@ckers who play that game.

    Try playing League of Legends, limited free to play but you can practice against AI before playing and though are elitists, its a better community than this game. Too bad I like the graphics of HoN but there is no way I'm touching a game without getting bashed at.

    HoN certainly has the worse online community I've ever met. I can only hope with release it will fix itself.
  • I have found the same to be true. I really hate the people bragging how elite they are and how people are noobs while they are playing in a DAMN NOOBS only game. I have found the quota to be about 10-20% of people. It could be that the average age is just very young.

    Considering that HoN is a fairly complex game, and that the average age of gamers is somewhere between 25-35 (according to various reports), I doubt the average age is very young.
  • Not only that, but half the games with "Noobs Only" in the title are pubstomps. So that doesn't help new players whatsoever.

    I don't know what it is about HoN that makes most players act like elitists. I mean I know in every online game there are elitists, but HoN takes the cake.

    Exactly. I'm surprised at just how angry people get. Especially in Noob Only games. Apparently the DoTA community was even worse. That is just what I get from the official forums and such though. I've never played DoTA, but I believe it. There's a specific group of 3 that I play with. We're all noobs, but we laugh about it. We enjoy the game whether we win or lose. Mostly anyway. We don't yell or scream at each other. It makes the game fun.

    I've been looking for something like this to pick up but the community really turned me off it before I even got to see what it was about. Why waste my time in that community? So can join it and hate noobs too? No thanks. Lighten up people. Don't join noob games if you don't want to play with noobs?
