Conceding – Are You Selfish?

19 November 2009 View Comments

To concede or not to concede? That is the question. One most people in pubs find asking themselves a lot. Some don’t care. Some will concede after a first tower is lost because to them winning a game means being perfect from first blood to last rax. Others will only concede as the other team is taking down their tree or shrine. Then there are the rare few that refuse to concede no matter what. So what kind are you? I’m all over the place personally. I concede at different times dependent fully on my team and their actions.

When Conceding is Selfish.

Conceding is selfish when you want to just leave because putting in the extra effort to win is beyond what you want to do. It becomes selfish when you don’t want to do anything more than hit a button and watch the enemy fall over. Need to work out a strategy with your team? Not what you joined for. Need to think outside the box? Over your head. You want a pubstomp. You want to win with little to no effort because that’s fun to you. If your team isn’t carrying you to victory while you hang out in base then you’re hitting the concede button. Not only that, but if your team doesn’t concede then you refuse to do anything except soak up that nice warm well water.

I don’t like you. I don’t want to play with you. I don’t want to have you on my team. I like to work on my game play. I like to become better. I like to work on team fights. A win coming from behind definitely leaves a better feeling afterward than a pubstomp. A loss with an added lesson in team fights is far more valuable to me than conceding. Your selfish actions keep me from learning and becoming a better player, but so long as you can leave and join an easy win game who cares right?

When Conceding is Justified.

There are times when conceding is justified. One example is when the other team refuses to end the game to pad their K:D. Then I’m all for conceding. There’s nothing to be learned from watching myself get owned by players 5 levels higher than me. There’s no lesson there except “Don’t feed them.” Another example is if I have teammates that refuse to do anything. They refuse to team fight, they refuse to help gank, they refuse to do anything except get ganked themselves because they refuse to leave a lane. See it’s all situational for me.

I thought I had a lot more to go in this section, but I really don’t. I don’t like conceding if there is a chance we can turn it around and win. I don’t like conceding because we had a rocky start. There are all sorts of things that can change that will give us the upper hand. One mistake from the other team could win us the game. That doesn’t mean I never do concede. It just means it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Story Time! fail

I played a game today as scout. Yep, evil scout. I had the most assists (team didn’t break double digits.) I initiated fights with ult, I silenced, I warded, and on top of all that I didn’t KS. So all in all I say my game play was good. My team wouldn’t team fight. They wouldn’t do … anything. We had more kills than the other team. We just could not team fight. I tried to explain. I told them to attack whoever I ulted. Nothing. I told them to attack …anything. Nothing. My team hated me because I refused to concede. We could win… but no one wanted to. Why? Because it would take some effort. It would take some team work. It would take some god damn common sense of who to attack first. They tried to kick. Fail. They tried calling me bad names saying that I wasn’t helping the team. “You tell us to fight as a team and you’re scout!!” So why didn’t I concede? Because they wouldn’t learn anything. It was obvious that they were noobs like myself. It was obvious they were used to someone else taking the reigns and pulling them to victory while they just auto attacked a hero. I was trying to teach, to show. I failed.

I don’t know what to say. Many would say that I was at fault for keeping my team there. I say it’s their fault for refusing to become better players. They chose not to become better. They chose not to win. Why is it my fault?
